Finding balance through somatic awareness
Brian Heery, Ph.D. SEP
Somatic Experiencing Practitioner
My path here began on the gymnastics mat, and later on the Aikido mat during my graduate studies in transpersonal psychology. As a competitor in two World Gymnastics Championships for Ireland, and later as a national coach for USA Gymnastics, I learned firsthand the importance of unity between body and mind — and how the body often holds wisdom the mind alone cannot access. That understanding deepened through nearly two decades as a direct student of Hiroshi Kato Shihan, culminating in a sixth-degree black belt in Aikido. Aikido isn't just self-defense; it's a practice of finding your center, your ground, and your balance under pressure — skills that translate directly to life off the mat.
Somatic Experiencing brought these threads together. My work begins with listening and observing — sensations, images, feelings, and actions — before exploring the thoughts, meaning, and larger cosmology behind them. This process has been a continual discovery, for my clients and for me, of how the body itself holds a key to building resilience and facilitating growth and transformation. I've watched clients move from feeling stuck or overwhelmed to feeling grounded, capable, and at ease in their own bodies — often in ways that talk alone couldn't reach.
Whether you're a competitive athlete looking to sharpen your edge, a recreational athlete seeking greater ease and flow, or someone navigating grief, stress, transition, or trauma — I'm here to help you build the balance and stability to meet life's challenges from a place of greater strength and resilience.
